A Special Note: As we have just moved the website, see below, bear with me as I have to import all the pictures and generally redesign the site plus do the necessary updating of the content. Any suggestions to this webguy, John Strain, please email me by clicking HERE. Our Club was formed in 1947. The weekly meetings of the Grosse Ile Rotary Club are held at the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club. Meetings are held every Thursday, 6:30 PM. Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club is located at the corner of Meridian and Grosse Ile Parkway. Check our link to GIGCC's Website Here Once the map launches, please click on West margin once to see how Grosse Ile ties into I-75 and the main road systems in the Downriver network. Click HERE for a PDF map to the GIG&CC. Our club's proudest moment was the elevation of our Member and Past President to the position of Super District 6400 District Governor, Roberto Sanchez, for the Rotary Year 2004-2005. Please click here to see a photograph of Bob and his wonderful family, HERE. Our current project is the preparation and production of the Grosse Ile Rotary Telephone Directory. From 6-1-2009, members and the project team are contacting past and prospective advertisers for inclusion in the 2010 & 2011 Directory. Additionally, correction for personal listings, new phone numbers and other changed have a common Dead Line of August 15, 2009. So time is coming for action. For more information about the Directory, including printable forms and views of our prospective cover pictures, please click HERE. Our 7th Annual Golf Outing on June 9h at the Raisin River Golf Course - East in beautiful Monroe, Michigan was a great success. Thanks for your support. We hope to see you again next year. Grosse Ile was honored by a return visit of the Right Reverend Zebedayo Daudi, Bishop of the Mbulu Lutheran Diocese in North Central Tanzania. This was the Bishop's second visit to Grosse Ile, the first some four years ago. Rotarians Bill Swasey and Ted Aller helped fill his days with us as part of his visit to Michigan. Thursday evening included his presentation to the Club's regular meeting. On Friday, September 25th, Bill arranged for the Bishop's presentation to three AP classes at the Grosse Ile High School, two before lunch and one after. The two before lunch were well and attentively attended. The one after lunch was "standing room only" as the word about this charming man had made the rounds at the High School. Friday evening included a reception at Grosse Ile's St Thomas Lutheran Church, where Bob Figi recorded the event with his camera. Something of note is that during the Bishop's first visit, GIRC PP Bill Swasey learned of a need for hearing aids for a school for the deaf operated by the Mbulu Diocese. With the Rotary Foundation's Matching Grant program and a ton of hard work with the "host club" in Tanzania, they have closed the project and have provided hearing aids to help children actually hear their parents for the first time in their lives. Talk about an uplifting experience. Here are some of Bob Figi's great photos of the visit to the reception at St Thomas, just click on the small image to see the full sized picture and notes. The Club's Citizen of the Year for 2009 is Gregory Goyert. He also was awarded a Rotary Foundation "Fellow". Dr. Goyert will be the "Grand Marshall" of the Island Fest parade on June 6, 2009. To view the full sized pictures, just click on the small edition below. June 6, 2009 was a perfect day for Grosse Ile's IslandFest parade on Macomb Street, our Township's Business District, with a clear sky and a slight breeze with the temperature about 70 degrees. Just perfect! This year's Grosse Ile Rotary Club's Citizen of the Year was the Parade's Grand Marshall. Our awardee was Dr. Gregory Goyert. He is pictured in our "Parade Car", a 1960 Chrysler Imperial, owned and driven by our Past President Peter Rock. Besides the Doctor and Pete, pictured in the car was the Doctor's wife, Marcie Treadwell. For detailed coverage of the IslandFest event and Dr. Goyert's role and participation, please click HERE to see the great coverage in our weekly newspaper, the Ile Camera, from 6-12-2009. One of the Annual Events of the Club is the support of the Delray Neighborhood House. Besides many things like tutoring, support of their Summer Program is the Annual Christmas Party for the kids. This is sponsored and supported by the Club but implemented and and planed by the Grosse Ile High School Interact Club. The current President of the club, Kristen Dowhan, pictured here on Santa's lap, probably requesting a pony for Christmas. Also pictured is this angelic boy communicating with Santa. The pictures are the complement of PDG Jim Karoyli, also the Web Master for the Super District 6400 website and a big supporter of our event. Kirsten is the current President of the Interact Club and has done a wonderful job of organizing the already too busy students at the Grosse Ile High School. She, with the faculty advisor, Eric Floode, one of the newest members of the GIRC, are working on successor leadership, as I type. Like with all the small pictures, just left mouse click to see an enlarged image of the pictures. Thanks again Jim, for your great camera work.
